Words simply don’t come to us as we try to describe what we have witnessed and experienced today within Antarctica. You may recall seeing the little picture on our blog of the cruise ship with penguins staring out at it through falling snow.  We added the caption “We hope to have this experience.”  Well, we awoke in Antarctica this morning with snow falling and groups of curious penguins staring out at us.  Dreams really do come true!!!!  We also now understand why Dr. Michael Wilcox considers this the most beautiful place on earth.  It is simply beyond description, and makes everything else seem so small and insignificant. We hope someday to be able to reflect on this experience and be able to fully comprehend what God has given us way down here at the bottom of the earth, protected from the degradations and incivilities of mankind.  This is truly the experience of a lifetime and we are very grateful to be having it.

We spent the entire day cruising through indescribable mountain vistas, islands of massive jagged peaks clothed in powder-sugar-white layers of ice and snow, with literally hundreds of glaciers dropping thousands of feet to the ocean. To those who have thought Antarctica is just a big flat white bump at the bottom of the world, better think again.  This is like the Alps, the Andes, the Rockies, and the Sierra Nevada all combined into one.  The waters we have been plying all day have been filled with ice figures and bergs of all shapes and sizes with the most amazing hues of blue. Our favorite is the brilliant sapphire blue that dazzles the eyes with its natural beauty.  We have only just barely scratched the outer fringes of Antarctica and this just goes on as far as the eye can see.  We’ve also been entertained by thousands of Gentoo Penguins in their huge rookeries and watched them waddle up steep hills then slide down on their bellies.  It’s like they are putting on a show for us.  However, the best was still yet to come.  More about that later.

Because it is Sunday we were favored once again with a Fireside gathering with Dr. Michael Wilcox as he shared his personal thoughts and insights on this beautiful place, one of God’s finest creations.  We were all very touched by his testimonial and words.

Dinner tonight was by far the best yet, and they’ve all been extraordinary.  It started with appetizers of Jumbo shrimp cocktail, followed by bowls of Chilled Strawberry soup.  After that we were brought platters filled with Rock Lobster Tail, Filet Mignon, and more Jumbo Prawns, grilled vegetables, and garlic potatoes.  My dessert consisted of a mixed berry and rhubarb crunch smothered in vanilla ice cream, and Marla’s was once again Mango sorbet.  She sure likes her sorbets.

The best part of dinner though was the entertainment. While dining we were treated to a whale of a show, literally.  Just outside the huge dining room wrap-around picture windows we witnessed numerous whales passing by the ship, putting on a remarkable breaching show.  It was certainly an amazing end to an amazing day.  We don’t know how it can be topped, but they tell us there’s lot’s more to come in the next several days.

You can probably tell we’re having a life-changing experience.  It’s all good, and we hope all is good for our many loved ones back in Utah and British Columbia. We try to think of you often, but there are some major distractions down here!!  Tom & Marla
