On the open sea, it’s been a day of travel as we work our way south down the 2,200 mile long coastlineof Chile. The weather is perfect, beautiful blue skies adorned with occasional fluffy white clouds. So far, no precipitation. Due to our 4 hour departure delay out of Valparaiso caused by striking dock workers, the Captain is attempting to make up the lost time by, as he put it “finding some more horses”. We are screaming across the open water at over 20 knots, and not surprisingly, we’re getting tossed and bumped around quite a bit. It’s important to get there as close to scheduled time though because we have to be tendered from ourcruise ship to the land in small boats where we're scheduled to take a day trip up into the Andes foothills andvisit some colonial European villages along with some beautiful waterfalls. It will be worth the discomfort of today’s high speed on the open seas to be able to have that experience tomorrow.
Today consisted of several lectures about Antarctica, and some of the early explorers including my very favorite...Ernest Shackleton. We also learned about the demographics of Antarctica today, the countries that currently have a vested interest there, and the research stations operated by the United States at Palmer Station on Anvers Island, McMurdo Sound, and the South Pole. The Antarctic Treaty of 1961, currently signed by 53 participating countries, prohibits all countries from owning any part of the continent, from mining or removing any natural resources, and from testing any nuclear weapons or depositing any nuclear waste materials anywhere on the continent. It’s a good thing because the Antarctic environment is amazingly fragile.
We were also entertained today by a ventriloquist/magician, and by the professional Tango Argentino Pampas Devils Gauchos direct from Buenos Aires. They sure make it look easy, but we know better. Our meals have been amazing. We started the day with breakfast in bed. We haven't done that in a very long time. Incredible omelettes, ham, bacon, hash brown potatoes, pastries, fresh fruit, Greek yogurt, fruit juice, and hot chocolate......OH MY!!! And that was just the breakfast!!! Lunch was delicious encrusted Tilapia, strawberry cream smoothies, Gouda cheese and mushroom burgers with fries, and dessert. Dinner was Dinner was baked stuffed Quail, grilled Arctic char, fresh veggies, fruit cream smoothie, salad and a dutch apple torte topped with vanilla ice cream. Needless to say, we're in BIG trouble, with an emphasis on BIG. Fortunately, tomorrow we’re on land all day and will get to eat in a much different environment and an entirely different menu perspective, like sack lunches.
We’re having a blast, finding it hard to believe that it is actually happening, but we intend to make the very best of every day. We’ll do our best to keep you posted. It took awhile but we finally figured out how to download photographs using the satellite based internet, but now we first have to find out if it can handle the amount of space that each photo takes up. If this gets to you with at least one photo attached, I’ll be happy. We hope all is well with everyone back home in Utah and Port Alberni. We keep trying to think of you as much as possible, but there ARE some major distractions out here. Love you all. Tom & Marla
